steerable cart

A steerable transfer cart by ELS was the perfect solution for a power-generation company.

Industrial lifting and material-handling equipment is the specialty of Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment Inc. (ELS). ELS has been assisting industrial businesses for over 45 years in the safe and efficient movement of heavy loads. ELS has an impressive track record of providing successful lifting and handling solutions. For example, a steerable cart recommended and supplied by ELS now helps an energy power-generation company to move an 11,000-pound motor for regular maintenance within its facility.

Floor-based load transporter

This power company had to perform monthly maintenance on a motor. Workers had been using an overhead monorail beam with a manual chain hoist to remove the motor from its mount for transfer to a push/pull cart with swivel casters and a tow-bar. They used a winch to pull the cart as they manually directed the casters in the appropriate direction of travel. The workers had issues with this operation due to a congested work space with height and space constrictions. They also had difficulty controlling the cart’s movements (steering, stopping, starting). The push/pull cart made handling operations physically demanding and created a serious health and safety risk.

The company considered powering their push/pull transfer cart, but the cart’s design could not accommodate such a modification. The space restrictions also negated the possibility of using a fork truck. A new cart was needed, so the power company turned to ELS for a more suitable product.

ELS recommended a steerable, battery-powered transfer cart with a six-ton capacity, a product ELS had manufactured solely. This ELS transfer cart featured a highly maneuverable, DC-battery-powered drive system capable of being driven by an operator at a speed of 50 feet per minute. Other features included an onboard battery charger, soft start and stop, holding brake, low-profile deck, and rugged, all-welded steel construction.

With this steerable cart, the motor-removal and transport task required only two workers, rather than three – one to operate the cart, the other as a spotter. The company is very satisfied with the ELS transfer cart, as it has made the work easier and faster to do, as well as reduce the risk of worker injury significantly.

This is just one of many ways that ELS has made workplaces better and safer.
