An ELS custom lifting beam was the perfect solution for a nuclear power company.

Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment Inc. (ELS) knows how to make difficult jobs easy for plants and warehouses that need lifting solutions. Not only does ELS supply crane and lifting equipment; it also works with customers to ensure that they get the right products for their requirements. One perfect example occurred a few years ago, when a company in the nuclear power-generation sector needed a custom lifting beam for heavy steel floor panels.

An exceptional team effort

This nuclear company was tasked with lifting a series of panels into a specialized chamber. The firm owned an overhead bridge crane, but the panels were outside of the crane’s hook coverage. The company had already spent several years looking for the right lifting solution for this application and had still come up empty so far.

To get the issue resolved, the company turned to the ELS team.

The ELS engineering department offered to design and construct a custom lifting beam that the customer could attach to the crane. The beam’s modular design would make shipping and assembly easier within the confined facility space, and it would also include a moving counterweight with a battery-powered drive system, load cell, integrated controls, and a warning system that could indicate inadequate beam balance.

The customer okayed the proposal, and ELS manufactured the equipment according to the company’s requirements and schedule. The ELS team also conducted load and functional tests to confirm the equipment’s abilities before shipment. After attaching the lifting beam to the crane, the workers could now reach the panels and perform controlled lifts by counterbalancing each load with precise controls. Operators needed only to adjust the counterweight position to achieve a balanced load, and they could reference a calibrated scale that showed load-capacity intervals with respect to counterweight locations.

This project was just one of many examples of the exceptional team effort ELS puts into serving customers, meeting their challenges of short delivery time, quick design engineering, quality compliance, and fabricating, finishing, assembling, and shipping on schedule. This custom lifting beam is still serving the nuclear company well.
