on-rail transfer cart

An ELS transfer cart has helped a mining refinery company move solvent tanks for several years.

Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment Inc. (ELS) has a broad portfolio of products that help warehouses and manufacturers turn heavy moving tasks into safe, simple operations. A big part of the company’s long-time success is its willingness to work closely with its customers to match the right solution to the individual application. For example, ELS once assisted a mining refinery company with an on-rail transfer cart for moving solvent tanks.

A custom-sized wooden deck

This refinery company required a solution for transporting ISO tanks that it was using in a solvent-extracting process for crushed rock. The tanks were carrying liquid that the company needed to bring inside the plant and transfer to a holding tank. To explore the options available, the firm’s mechanical engineers and process plant maintenance planners turned to ELS.

ELS sent its technical sales team to review the customer’s request and specifications. With its collective expertise, ELS then recommended a DC-powered on-rail transfer cart with a 40-ton capacity and a wooden deck custom-sized to accommodate one tank. This cart also had four mounting pads matching the frame of the tanks, and the deck had a two-degree slope from front to back to help drain the liquid acid. Operators could control the cart by either remote radio or a handheld tethered pendant.

The on-rail transfer cart was powered by rechargeable batteries and moved on standard rails, both forward and in reverse, with a cable reel managing the 45-foot power cable for the onboard 115-volt battery charger. Another advantage was the limit switches for activating controls to slow the speed and bring the cart to a halt consistently without hitting a hard stop. Each end had amber flashing lights as well.

The refinery company bought the cart and found its service very reliable. Two years later, ELS retrofitted the cart with four load cells, to manage loading of the holding tanks more effectively. Seven years after the initial purchase, the customer bought a second cart with a reduced height profile, reversed slope, and integrated load cells. Another success story and satisfied customer for ELS.
