Durham Instruments supplies six models of head and torso simulators

Brüel & Kjær makes many kinds of HATS devices.

Brüel & Kjær is a major manufacturer of industrial devices, which are available in Canada through Durham Instruments. The lineup includes 11 kinds of acoustic sensors, which customers use to measure and transmit sound and vibration with high fidelity. Among these sensors are head and torso simulators, or HATS.

This unique HATS selection includes high-frequency and sound-quality options, in addition to symmetrical pinnas and pinnas with tapered ear canals.

For recording noise and more

There are six basic types of Brüel & Kjær head and torso simulators available from Durham Instruments. The DZ-9769 and DZ-9770 series of symmetrical pinnas for HATS comply with the ITU-T Rec. P.58, IEC 60318-7, and ANSI S3.36-1985 standards, including testing of headphones and hearing protectors, in addition to measurements on telephones, hands-free communication devices, and hearing aids. Also available are the DZ-9773 and DZ-9774 models of pinnas with tapered ear canals for HATS, offering easy mounting of earbuds. With a slightly modified ear-canal entrance, the pinna shapes are conical merged with a cylinder, so users can easily seal earbuds to pinnas during tests.

The Type 4100/4100D sound-quality HATS are designed for recording in-vehicle noise for sound evaluation and testing; they are also useful for sound optimization of consumer appliances, office equipment, power tools, marine equipment, and heavy machinery. Other examples of use scenarios for these series:

• recording noise from sub-suppliers’ products and components to evaluate and optimize their sound quality;
• evaluating headphones and hearing protectors when a blocked ear canal is preferred;
• binaural sound and music recording; and
• in-vehicle NVH recordings with Sonoscout Type 3663.

Type 4128-C head and torso simulators have built-in ear and mouth simulators that offer realistic reproductions of the acoustic properties of the average head and torso. They are built for electro-acoustics on telephone handsets, headsets, audio conference devices, microphones, headphones, hearing aids, and hearing protectors. The Type 4128-D series is similar, but includes handset positioners for accurate placing of telephone handsets for electro-acoustic measurements. And the Type 5128 HATS family has built-in realistic ear and mouth simulators and covers the full audible frequency range.
