Variations of the JC600 joystick, from Durham Instruments

In automation, mining, forestry and other industries, it is important that operator controls in cranes, loaders, excavators, tractors and other off-highway vehicles are dependable, to get work done safely and smoothly. The JC6000 rugged joystick controller from Durham Instruments is perfect for demanding operator-control applications in these sectors.

Features and benefits

The JC6000 is easy to install and has several different options for handle and grip designs, with or without switches, to help increase the functionality of the operator control. It has a choice of single or dual axis control, as well as multi-lock connectors, potentiometric or Hall-effect sensors and high proportional control. It is also interchangeable with the JC600 joystick model from Penny + Giles.

With additional operator-control functions, safety features, and both rugged and smooth lever movement, the JC6000 promises a life of up to 15 million operations with no maintenance required.  The joystick enables user configuration for system safety and is capable of operating in hostile environments. Its compact size and high lever strength are assets that make it appropriate for different kinds of work vehicles.

The dual outputs on the Hall-effect sensors are a boon to workplace safety, as they allow signals to be monitored to detect failure, which is vital in safety-critical tasks. Certain switch functions are available to indicate direction and centre position during start-up, and potentiometric sensors can be specified to have padding resistors to limit output signals, in order to allow comparison and detect errors. The JC6000 is perfectly compatible with today’s occupational safety standards.

Durham provides five different handle options for the JC6000:

  • HKN: No additional functions, but the user can control the joystick by holding the handle palm-downwards;
  • NH/NHF: For operations in which no handle is required. The NHF has wires connected to the joystick on the base through the operating lever;
  • HB: Designed to be held like a traditional handle, with a thumb button or switch on top for additional functions;
  • “A” Range: Developed for complex control systems, with several buttons or switches; and
  • MG: Designed to keep the user’s fingers close to the top button or switch, to minimize worker fatigue.
