The Ohio Broach dual-ram vertical machine

The Ohio Broach & Machine Company is known for its broaching capabilities. But the team also makes its own broaching machines: some for its own use, and some to provide for customers who want to conduct their own private broaching applications. One key example is a dual-ram vertical broaching machine, which has a compact and versatile design that takes up little floor space. Customers can achieve high cost savings with this unit.

Hardened, ground steel ways

One of many models that the company manufactures, the machine has capacities that range from five to 15 tons and strokes that go from 48 to 72 inches. This dual-ram vertical broaching machine has hardened and ground steel ways made out of high carbon steel, which is hardened and tempered before the team grinds it to closely controlled tolerances. The result is durability and long operational life.

Another major feature of the dual-ram vertical broaching machine is its precision ram slides. These are constructed from close-grain, high-tensile cast iron, and the surfaces are scraped by hand for precise fits and flaked for maximum lubrication penetration. The compact design includes a ram slide and table sub-assemblies mounted on a rigid base weldment. The lower weldment portion serves as a coolant reservoir.

The company has also incorporated a high-performance, fixed-displacement vane pump into this machine, in conjunction with other high-performance valves and controls, which results in a dependable open-loop drive-system design. This machine is available to clients with the standard alternating ram cycle or with individual ram operation, which makes it virtually two machines on one base.

The standard model of this device includes platen, non-moving tables, and other table types are available from Ohio Broach. Examples include tip-back tables that tilt the work-holding fixture back 35 degrees from the horizontal and in-feed shuttle tables that move on a horizontal plane, so the equipment can make repeat passes until it reaches a predetermined cut depth. Clients can receive a blend of both table types on request, in a more versatile design. Machine-tool grey and vista green are the standard colours.
