IBIS carries photoelectric slot sensors by Dietz.

IBIS Electro-Products Corp. is Canada’s top source of sensors by Dietz Sensortechnik. Dietz’ portfolio includes a range of photoelectric fork sensors (also known as slot sensors), each of which operates with an infrared light. These instruments are recommended for several application fields, such as assembly automation and feeding systems, packaging and special-purpose machinery, and production plants.

Individual applications for these Dietz devices include detection and counting of objects, positioning and presence checks, detection of thin foils and wires, rotational-speed measurement, and double-sheet detection.

Reliable detection of quick movements

Dietz bases the design of its photoelectric fork sensors on the working principle of through-beam sensors. A robust metal casing on each device houses the transmitter, receiver, and electronics, and no time-consuming alignments are required; the sensor is easier to assemble and has a shorter response time and higher resolution than conventional through-beam sensors do. This results in precise positioning and reliable detection of extremely quick movements. Dietz equips the sensors with an NO/NC switch, and the integrated potentiometer can adjust sensitivity levels, while the infrared light maintains high levels of ambient light immunity.

IBIS offers several models of these Dietz photoelectric fork sensors, each of which has an infrared light, high switching frequency, and an IP67 enclosure rating. These sensors are distinguished by varying fork widths: two, five, ten, 20, 30, 40, 50, 80, 100, 120, 180, and 220 millimetres (mm). Common technical data for these devices when used at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius include the following:

  • Resolution of 0.4 mm;
  • Supply voltage of ten to 35 VDC;
  • Output current of 200 mA;
  • Internal power consumption of less than 45 mA;
  • Short-circuit protection;
  • Polarity protection;
  • Insulation voltage endurance of 500 volts;
  • Response/release time of 0.2 milliseconds;
  • Switching frequency of 2.5 kilohertz;
  • Switching hysteresis of 0.2 mm; and
  • Ambient light immunity of 50 klx.

Reproducibility for these slot sensors varies between 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, or 0.1 mm, depending on the device’s fork width.

High-performance slot sensors and devices with lasers are also available.
