There’s a reason most of the contractors involved in building the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline, which stretches more than 2,100 miles from Hardisty, Alta., to Houston, Texas, chose Protal 7200 pipeline coating for girth weld protection. It has a fast cure and a high build — two must-have features for large projects where time is a factor, but a high-quality product is still required.

The massive 36-inch crude oil pipeline is one of the world’s largest pipeline projects. Most of the contractors involved in the project, which was constructed in spreads 100 miles each, selected Protal 7200 as the girth weld coating because of its outstanding physical properties. Its fast cure ability allows them to use the same coating for the protection of all weld joints, including girth welds, tie-ins and bore joints, as well as holiday repairs — making it an efficient choice, too.

Protal 7200 is a two-part, 100 per cent solids epoxy coating from Denso North America that can be applied in one coat up to 50 mils. Additionally, it has high impact and abrasion resistance for directional drill applications, as well as temperature resistance up to 85 degrees C (185 degrees F).

Using Denso’s “Accelerated Cure Specifications for Repairs”, the contractors were able to achieve a five-minute cure with the Protal 7200 when repairing holidays in the FBE (fusion bonded epoxy) during the pipeline “lowering-in” process. Unlike FBE, which requires expensive and heavy equipment, Protal 7200 only requires a brush or roller to apply. The contractors were able to coat up to 150 weld joints per day without the costly risk of downtime due to equipment failure. These cost savings make Protal 7200 ideal for a variety of field applications, including girth welds, tie-ins, HDD applications, station piping, fittings and repairs to FBE.

With offices throughout the U.S. and Canada, including locations in Toronto and Edmonton, Denso North America offers a number of products designed for corrosion prevention and sealing. Contact Denso North America for details on Protal 7200 or any of its other offerings.
