Denso tape helps prevent lead contamination of B.C. river

A dated railcar bridge that crosses over the Upper Fraser River, just outside of a small town in Northern British Columbia, had an oil pipeline suspended from the lower deck. The pipeline was originally coated with a lead-based paint that had just begun to flake off and fall into the river, which is a source of drinking water for the province, as well as a habitat for native fish species such as salmon and sturgeon. Something needed to be done to prevent any further contamination. 

Enter Denso North America

The decision was made to use Denso ColorTape, from Denso North America, to overwrap the existing lead paint and prevent any further corrosion of the pipe, or lead contamination of the river. Denso Glass Outerwrap was used to mechanically strengthen the coating system in locations where the pipe was suspended by saddles. 

Denso tape was chosen because of its general properties, ease of installation and because of its resistance to UV rays. In addition, it is designed to withstand extreme temperature variations, and provides long-term corrosion protection. Another bonus: the surface preparation requirement is minimal, which allowed the contractor to wrap the pipeline without abrasive blasting — a costly and time-consuming task.

Easy application

Denso tape is easy to install and requires no special training to apply. The work for this particular project was accomplished by building a temporary scaffolding system that was suspended from the bridge, allowing workers to access the full length of the pipeline crossing and successfully coat the pipe as the occasional train crossed the upper deck of the bridge.
