For those applications that require the long-term protection of steel structures exposed to corrosive marine environments, Denso North America has the ideal solution. Its Rigspray, part of the company’s SeaShield Marine Systems line, is a polyester two-part high solids reinforced glass flake coating designed to offer outstanding resistance to corrosion and abrasion.

Coating features and advantages

Rigspray is ideally suited for use in the oil industry on offshore structures, particularly in such areas as splash zones, underdeck areas and riser pipes. Its resistance to corrosive acids, alkalis, salts and a range of oxidizing chemicals make it a top choice for use on steel structures like pilings, sheet piling, bulkheads and more, that are subject to aggressive marine environments.

Rigspray’s many features include fast dry and set times, a high build up to 40 mils in one coat, very low water permeability and high temperature tolerance, as well as excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals, abrasion, undercutting and water or seawater.

In addition, the coating is versatile. By simply introducing a non-slip element, it can be used on helidecks, main deck surfaces and all areas subject to extreme mechanical damage and erosion. Plus, multi-layer coating can still be achieved if patch repairing is necessary, thanks to Rigspray’s excellent inter-coat adhesion properties.

Another bonus: the coating is simple to apply. Users first need to prepare the surface by grit blasting it to a clean, near white finish. Plate edges, corners and weld areas should be stripe coated by brush prior to applying the coating. The coating can then be applied by brush or airless spray in one coat, but the materials must be at least 10 degrees C (50 degrees F) before spraying. A wet film thickness gauge can be used to measure uniform application and ensure adequate coverage.
