Protal ST is a potent pipeline coating.

An unsurpassed lineup of sealing and anti-corrosion solutions for pipelines and infrastructure: this is what Canadian industry has come to expect from Denso North America. Among these products are Protal liquid coatings, widely trusted for solving issues in challenging environments. Protal ST Epoxy Mastic is an example.

A surface-tolerant coating designed for applications in which steel grit blasting is not feasible, Protal ST offers first-rate protection in long-term exterior exposure.

High penetration and adhesive qualities

Protal ST Epoxy Mastic is a two-part, high-solids, quick-drying coating that functions on its own and in combination with other topcoats for long-term water exposure. It is recommended for applications involving structural steel, pipe externals, pipe racks, tanks, offshore platforms, locks, gates, and bridges. The mastic can be applied directly onto wire-brushed rusty steel substrates and achieves long-term protection through its high penetration and adhesive qualities.

Major benefits of this Epoxy Mastic include minimal surface preparation, high water and seawater resistance, good resistance to acids and alkalis, low volatile organic compounds, and high flexibility, hardness, and adhesion.

Denso advises workers to remove loose scale, rust, or foreign matter from the surface before applying Protal ST, as per SP2 “Hand Cleaning” or SP3 “Power Tool Cleaning” or by high-pressure water wash. Next, clean and dry the surface with compressed air or brushing, leaving a faint metallic sheen. The next step is to pour the Protal ST hardener into the base component and mix it slowly and thoroughly with a power whip for two minutes.

Before coating is applied, the substrate temperature must be at least three degrees Celsius above the dew-point temperature. The first coat can then be applied by brush or spray to a wet film thickness of ten mils. The user can apply the second coat to the same wet film thickness after at least four hours at 25 degrees Celsius. Finally, apply a final weather-resistant top coat by brush or spray after the coating is completely dry.

Users can apply Protal ST in temperatures from -29 to 52 degrees Celsius; preheat surfaces in temperatures under ten degrees Celsius.
