Protal 7250 epoxy coating by Denso is suitable for many applications.

Corrosion prevention and sealing are Denso North America’s specialties, particularly when it comes to pipelines. The company offers several types of Protal pipeline epoxy coatings – including Protal 7250, a high-build, fast-cure liquid coating that applicators can spray in one coat.

Protal 7250 is a two-part epoxy coating that is completely free of volatile organic compounds and contains 100 per cent solids content. Its fast curing ability enables quick handling and backfill times.

Specially formulated for FBE-coated pipes

Protal 7250 has been specially formulated to complement pipes already coated in fusion-bonded epoxy, or FBE, and can be used for numerous coating applications, such as onsite protection of girth welds, tie-ins, welds for boring tasks, FBE repairs, pushrack applications, station piping, fittings, and fabrication. It also comes in very handy as a mainline pipe coating or as a sacrificial coating for directional drills and road bore pipes, or to rehabilitate existing pipelines.

Protal 7250 is spray applied using a plural component airless spray unit with a proportioning pump capable of a volume-mixing ratio of three to one, with properly sized hoppers and static mixers, plus a whip hose and mastic gun. The user should initially prepare the surface by grit-blasting it to a clean, near-white finish. The next step is to heat Part A of the coating between 60 and 75 degrees Celsius and Part B between 43 and 55 degrees Celsius, while the hose bundle is heated in the same range as Part A. Next, the user should employ a wet-on-wet spray technique for a minimum thickness of 20 mils (508 microns), measured with a wet-film thickness gauge.

Other notable features of this epoxy coating:

  • Fast touch dry and set times;
  • Resistance of temperatures as high as 95 degrees Celsius;
  • High abrasion resistance;
  • Excellent adhesion;
  • Environmentally and user-friendly qualities;
  • Numerous packaging options available;
  • Compliance with CSA Z245.30-14 standards; and
  • Compliance with American Water Works Association C210-92 specifications.
