Protal 7200 can be applied by brush or spray.

Pipeline companies count on the lineup of pipeline coatings available from Denso North America, one of many types of anti-corrosion and sealing products the company makes for oil and gas, infrastructure, and more. Protal 7200 is one of the most powerful examples, as a fast-curing, high-build pipeline coating for FBE-coated pipe.

Protal 7200 is a two-part, 100 per cent solids epoxy coating that can be applied easily in one pass, in the field or in the shop.

Quicker handling and backfill

A major benefit of this coating is that it cures very quickly, resulting in faster handling and backfill. Denso recommends Protal 7200 for many pipeline-related applications, including onsite protection of girth welds, tie-ins, welds for boring tasks, FBE repairs, push-rack applications, station piping, fittings, and fabrication. Other common uses that workers choose for this product: mainline coating; sacrificial coating for direction drill and road bore pipe; and rehabilitation of existing pipelines.

Among the many key advantages and features of Protal 7200 pipeline coating:

  • compliance with AWWA C-210-92 and CSA Z 245.30;
  • environmental responsibility;
  • fast touch-dry and set times;
  • high abrasion resistance;
  • high adhesion;
  • high build – of up to 70 mils or 1,778 microns in one coat;
  • outstanding self-levelling characteristics;
  • temperature resistance of up to 95 degrees Celsius; and
  • a variety of packaging options.

Users can apply Protal 7200 by either brush or spray. For application by brush, the surface should first be prepared with grit blasting. Then the base and hardener should be stirred until the mixture has a constant colour. The next step: users should apply the mixed material to the surface and brush to the desired mil thickness. Then preheat the surfaces below ten degrees Celsius in order to get a quicker cure.

To apply Protal 7200 by spray, Denso recommends an XP70 Plural Component Sprayer. This device mixes and atomizes 100 per cent solids epoxies. A wet-on-wet spray technique is necessary to reach of minimum thickness of 508 microns, measuring the coating thickness with a wet-film thickness gauge. Denso representatives must train workers beforehand to ensure proper use.
