petrolatum tape

Denso Hi-Tack Petrolatum Tape is an ideal choice for protecting valve chambers from water infiltration.

Denso North America supplies industrial products that are ideal for many applications, from pipeline protection to road sealing. Another common use for its petrolatum tape and primers is waterproofing valve chambers, sanitary systems, and catch basins. If water infiltrates these structures, consequences could include erosion of concrete, potholes in roads from loss of material, or treatment of ground water at pollution-control plants.

Inflow and infiltration, or I&I, was on the minds of Niagara Region officials last year after they contracted a firm to install a valve chamber, measuring 2.7 by 3.3 metres, underground on Carleton Street in Thorold, Ont. To resolve any potential issues, this firm, Nielsen Tran Mechanical Contractors, turned to Denso.

A permanent waterproofing solution

Because I&I could accelerate corrosion of the chamber materials, which could cause premature failure of appurtenances, Nielsen Tran needed a permanent waterproofing solution. The contractor settled on Denso Petrolatum Tape, which is often applied to concrete joints for infiltration prevention; Nielsen Tran decided to apply it over the entire chamber because of the high water table.

First, Denso representatives trained Nielsen Tran employees on how to use the manufacturer’s Hi-Tack Primer and 12″ Hi-Tack Tape. Then the contractor applied a thin, uniform coating of the primer around the whole exterior of the valve chamber from the bottom up, before wrapping the structure horizontally with the tape. To waterproof the base of the chamber, the workers needed to set it carefully on pre-laid Hi-Tack Tape strips. No curing or drying was necessary, so the contractor could back-fill the valve chamber right away.

Denso Hi-Tack Petrolatum Tape has many advantages in this application. Flexible and water-tight, it ensures infiltration prevention even if the concrete breaks or cracks. A minimum of surface preparation is required, and users can apply at any time of the year, regardless of the weather. The tape also helps to prevent ice-related heaving of risers and frames in winter.

As Denso Hi-Tack Petrolatum Tape has many decades of proven, successful performance, the Niagara Region can rest assured that this chamber will stay protected for years.
