Air Canada recently used DensoBand at the Pearson Airport.

DensoBand, bitumen strips produced by Denso North America, are used for sealing between hot asphalt joints and existing asphalt, concrete, steel, and rubber mats. The product is trusted by many users in construction, road maintenance, bridge repair, rail transportation and other sectors that are vital to daily life. Even Canada’s largest airline relies on it – particularly during a renovation project last year.

Fixing patches

In 2016, Air Canada needed to replace three large patches of damaged asphalt and concrete on its taxiway at Terminal 1 of the Lester B. Pearson International Airport in Toronto. This project was necessary and urgent, as Pearson International is not only Air Canada’s main hub, but the country’s largest and busiest airport. Hundreds of the airline’s jets move on this taxiway every day, so a smooth and reliable asphalt surface is essential for the safety of all passengers and crew members.

To replace the patches, Air Canada contracted Graham Bros. Construction, which chose to use DensoBand. The company used 550 linear metres of 8×75-millimetre DensoBand compound to seal the damaged areas. Today, the taxiway is expected to withstand future asphalt movement and thermal expansion, thanks to Denso.

Why pick DensoBand?

A polymer modified bitumen strip in rectangular form and various sizes, DensoBand is used with Denso Primer D or Denso Spray Primer and produced in rolls with a disposable interleaving.

DensoBand is renowned for its uniform, watertight and flexible seal, its high adhesion strength and durability. Users can apply it by hand or machine, and it requires no maintenance after it has been applied to the road surface. A DensoBand seal not only withstands thermal expansion and asphalt movement – it also prevents cracking and propagation.

DensoBand is also relatively easy and quick to install. The user applies Primer D to the vertical face to be joined with a brush or roller or has the option of an aerosol Spray Primer; after it dries to a tacky consistency, the DensoBand strip is heated and applied along the vertical edge of the joint, the user then installs hot asphalt, which completes the bond to the DensoBand.
