From spurs to racks

Rapid Gear has a continual growth plan that includes investing in the most advanced machining equipment and the most skilled workers, to ensure quality in its custom gears. The company’s machines can handle a gear capacity from 2 to 200 inches and a lifting ability of up to 30 tons.

At the Rapid Gear plant, horizontal lathes are capable of turning gear blanks up to three feet in diameter and 13 feet in length between centres, while the company’s CNC lathes can handle up to 19 inches in diameter and nearly five feet long between centres. Vertical boring mills can handle specifications of up to 128 inches in diameter and 75 inches high, and slotting can achieve a 108-inch diameter and a 17.5-inch stroke. CNC horizontal mills have the capacity to handle work pieces 200 inches in length and 90 feet high.  Rapid Gear’s gear-grinding capabilities include external and internal grinding achieving agma qualities from 11-14.

As for gear cutting, Rapid Gear can do anything from single units to production runs, with a gear capacity from two to 200 inches. Among the possible gear types:

• Bevel. Diameter up to three feet, pitch up to 1.25 DP.
• Double helical. Diameter up to 197 inches, pitch up to 0.5 DP, 35-inch face.
• Internal. Diameter up to 15 feet, pitch up to one DP, one-foot face.
• Rack. Pitch up to 0.5 DP.
• Sprocket. Diameter up to 197 inches, pitch up to six DP, multiple faces.
• Spur. Diameter up to 197 inches, pitch up to 0.5 DP, 20-inch face.
• Worm. Diameter up to five feet, pitch up to 0.75 DP.
