Ohio Broach helped a wrench-jaw manufacturer.

The Ohio Broach & Machine Company has accumulated a long track record of customer success stories over 66 years in the broaching industry. The company benefits many client broaching projects with unparalleled levels of expertise and skill in design, engineering, manufacturing, and machine building – always supplying the solution the customer needs.

One example: a manufacturer of ready-to-assemble wrench jaws, which was looking for a better wrench-jaw tooling process. As always, Ohio Broach delivered.

New three-step broaching process

This customer was using an insufficient wrench-jaw tooling process in its projects. Workers were tooling the jaws on a small machine that offered only two feet of stroke, so the deep slot in every part required multiple passes to broach. As a result, tooling breakage caused production to slow down often.

A better option was needed immediately. So the company turned to the Ohio Broach team, who redesigned the slot tools to broach every deep slot in only one pass. This meant that the client could conduct the process on a 15-ton machine with 90 inches of stroke. It also allowed the employees to broach rounded slots and serrated tooth forms in progressive operations on the same equipment.

The Ohio Broach crew recommended a new three-step process of broaching, drilling, and finishing, which enabled far faster transfer of materials between the production stages – thereby boosting the productivity and efficiency of the operation. Following every stroke of the broaching machine, the operator could remove a completely broached part from the fixture and turn around to put it in the drilling machine, to drill each hold to tolerance during the broaching of the next part. The drilling machine would clamp the fixture hydraulically when a few buttons were pressed. Finally, deburring, heat treatment, and black oxidization would help to finish off the part.

The customer went ahead with this new tooling process right away, and the results were obviously better than the preceding results. Broaching projects now became faster and easier, and all needless downtime and repetition were eliminated. With Ohio Broach, such outcomes are always expected.
