So it is up to the user to strike a perfect balance between reactive and preventive maintenance, to maximize reliability and performance while minimizing cost of ownership. While predictive maintenance is extremely beneficial, certain situations demand reactive maintenance. Equipment can break down unexpectedly regardless of planning – sometimes even immediately after a routine inspection. External forces beyond anyone’s control, like extreme weather, can damage assets suddenly, so fast recovery in an emergency is vital. Reactive maintenance is also advantageous when an older piece of equipment will likely be replaced soon.
