Costco's Orillia, Ont. location

Denso North America helps customers in many industries – from construction and rail transportation to road maintenance and bridge repair – to fix and smooth out asphalt with DensoBand, its brand of hot asphalt joint sealing compound. Earlier this year, retail giant Costco Wholesale received assistance from Denso when it needed to protect the asphalt at its newly opened Orillia, Ont. location.

The pavement situation

One of the world’s largest retailers, Costco has more than 90 warehouses in Canada alone and opened seven additional Canadian locations this year. Before opening its new Orillia store, the company realized it needed to fix the most dangerous areas of the asphalt surrounding the store and the gas station, in order to avoid possible injuries to customers and employees.

To get the job done, Costco contracted KJ Beamish Construction, which brought DensoBand to the table as its sealing compound of choice. KJ Beamish installed more than 500 linear metres of DensoBand around the apron of the store and the gas station. This is expected to extend the life of the asphalt joints and eliminate customer hazards.

Available in a wide array of size and thickness, DensoBand has a proven reputation as a reliable product for sealing joints in hot asphalt surfaces between asphalt, concrete and steel. Users appreciate DensoBand for its many high-quality features:

  • Uniform, watertight and flexible seal;
  • High adhesion strength;
  • High durability;
  • Minimum maintenance required;
  • Applicable by either hand or machine;
  • Ability to withstand asphalt movement and thermal expansion; and
  • Ability to prevent cracks and propagation.

Another advantage of using DensoBand is its quick installation. First, workers apply Denso Primer D or Spray Primer to the vertical face. After it dries to a tacky consistency, they heat the DensoBand strip and apply it along the vertical edge of the joint. Hot asphalt is then installed.
