belt-conveyor pulleys

Several kinds of belt-conveyor pulleys are available.

For close to six decades, Continental Conveyor Ltd. has manufactured and supplied top-grade material-handling equipment, including important components such as belt-conveyor pulleys. A key advantage of relying on the Continental team for these pulleys is its considerable ability to design and fabricate them to comply with virtually any customer requirement.

While these conveyor pulleys come in several standard drum-style models, Continental offers customized modifications as well to suit individual applications.

Rubber and slide lagging

One way that Continental customizes its belt-conveyor pulleys is with lagging, which is used primarily in conditions that necessitate raising the tractive capacity in drive applications or for resisting abrasive conditions on other applications. Vulcanized rubber lagging without cloth fabric is applied directly to the pulley face through a vulcanizing process. This leaves a cloth impression on the finished rubber surface. Applications that need exact tolerances work best with machined lagged pulleys.

Another option is herringbone rubber lagging, applied to increase the tractive capacity of a pulley under wet or dirty conditions in which plain lagging will not do. The herringbone design helps to prevent buildup of foreign material between the belt and pulley surface, reducing belt wear and minimizing misalignment. In addition, a quality rubber lagging can be bonded directly to special traction pads fitted to the pulley rim by special retaining bars.

Models of belt-conveyor pulleys available from Continental:

  • Lagged wing pulleys. Recommended for applications involving buildup of material between the conveyor belt and pulley, resulting in belt misalignment and high wear.
  • Spiral drum pulleys. A unique design that minimizes belt wear and misalignment. Rotation automatically begins a self-cleaning action, discharging foreign material to the conveyor sides.
  • Spiral wing pulleys. Used in conditions requiring reduction of material buildup between belt and pulley, while using the wing principle of the self-cleaning pulley.
  • Special drum-type pulleys. Continental can make special modifications to standard pulleys to suit individual requirements – like adding retaining rims to ensure alignment.
  • Special self-cleaning pulleys. Pulleys that come in contact with acidic baths can adopt an entire stainless steel construction or an entirely open design.
