Denso products came in handy in a recent watermain installation project near Toronto.

One of Denso North America’s most useful and versatile products is Denso Low-Temperature (LT) Petrolatum Tape, a non-woven synthetic fabric tape that protects pipes, valves, flanges, and more against corrosion. Just last year, the LT tape and other high-quality Denso products became a vital part of an important water-pipeline installation project in the Greater Toronto Area.

Long-term anti-corrosion prevention

Peel Region is one of the four regional municipalities surrounding Toronto, and it includes Mississauga. In 2017, the region undertook the Hanlan Water Project, which involved the installation of a Hanlan Feedermain and a Subtransmission Watermain for the Mississauga city centre. These installations were necessary to provide water for one of the most densely populated and fastest-growing areas of Canada.

The Feedermain had a diameter of 1.5 metres and would run about 14.5 kilometres from the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant on Lake Ontario to the Hanlan Reservoir and Pumping Station. Meanwhile, the Watermain measured 2.4 metres in diameter and would run roughly six kilometres from the Pumping Station. Although some of the steel appurtenances were buried underground, some were stationed in large chambers. Damage from corrosion was a serious risk, even though the steel was coated with paint or epoxy.

Peel Region hired McNally Construction as the contractor for this project. McNally needed a top-grade system for protecting these pipes and fittings for a long time, and they turned to Denso for the solution.

The company elected to use the Denso LT Petrolatum Tape system. First, the workers applied Denso Paste to the pipes following a brief surface preparation. They also used Denso Profiling Mastic and Mastic Blankets to create a smooth profile where necessary. Then they spirally wrapped a 55 per cent overlap of Denso LT Petrolatum Tape by hand over the substrates.

Municipal designers, engineers, and construction companies rely on Denso products for long-term protection against corrosion. Denso LT Petrolatum Tape is impregnated with a neutral petrolatum compound for application in cool temperatures, and it is renowned for being easy to install, environmentally safe, and resistant to ultraviolet rays and for requiring minimal preparation.
