ELS helped a steel-fabrication company make a condo rebuilding project easier and safer.

Businesses in all sorts of industries trust Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment (ELS) for the best lifting solutions, and that includes companies involved in construction projects. ELS has an impressive track record of helping these customers make their construction and rebuilding projects easier and safer. A perfect example happened in downtown Toronto a couple of years ago, when ELS provided the right solution for a high-rise condominium rebuilding project with custom jigs.

Removing an old concrete wall

A commercial and industrial structural steel-fabrication company was working on the project, which involved expanding an 18-storey condo building to a 55-storey height. To do this, the company needed a new solution for removing the building’s old exoskeleton concrete wall. Safety was a major priority here, due to a high level of pedestrian traffic in the vicinity of the building, and presenting an image of safety was also very crucial.

What was required was a custom jig apparatus that would mount on the hook of a tower crane. Since the company had had previous good experiences sourcing overhead material-handling equipment from ELS, it decided to turn to ELS again.

The company asked ELS to design and build two custom jigs. One would engage with flat wall sections, while the other would work for corner sections. The jig fixtures had to be below-the-crane hook devices and could not exceed the limits of the tower crane when they were loaded.

ELS agreed to design and manufacture these devices. First, as it does with every custom design, ELS had to conduct a careful analysis of the lifting requirements of the application. Both of the custom jigs needed extended brackets to reach into wall panels and secure them for removal from building to ground level. ELS also designed a centre-of-gravity device to accommodate both load and unload conditions.

Once in place, these jig devices performed all lifting operations very safely and ended up saving a lot of time and money for the steel-fabrication company. The customer was very happy with the safety and reliability of ELS’ solution, and the project went smoothly.
