The Modular Industrial Computing Architecture system from HARTING now has wireless capability.

The Modular Industrial Computing Architecture system, or MICA, has just gotten better. The HARTING Technology Group, which created MICA, recently partnered with Arrow Electronics to add wireless sensors to this machine-monitoring system.

No more need for cables

A modular, open-edge computing system used by many manufacturers, the MICA system is a compact solution for monitoring machine conditions. It has been available in Canada in six different designs, able to support Profinet, Ethercat, Modbus, RFID and other typical industrial interfaces. Users can easily adapt the MICA to their own individual requirements.

The new MICA Wireless Sensor Networks solution was introduced at the SPS IPC Drives trade show in Nuremberg, Germany in November. Arrow’s enhancements to the system have added sensors that communicate through wireless protocols, allowing the product to receive data via SmartMESH IP, Bluetooth Low Energy, and XBee, no matter what the machine controls are.

With the MICA Wireless Sensor Networks system, manufacturers no longer need to invest in Ethernet cables or other expensive industrial sensors to monitor their equipment for information on temperature or operating times. This will make the process of monitoring these data easier and more cost-efficient. The new wireless MICA can communicate with wireless sensors on machinery in many ways.

Arrow Electronics is a member of the MICA network, which exists to connect specialized partners involved in industrial Internet projects.
