wrench jaw tooling

Ohio Broach helped a wrench-jaw manufacturer.

The Ohio Broach & Machine Company can count a substantial track record of success stories over its nearly 65 years in the broaching field. The company’s unique levels of expertise and skills in design, engineering, manufacturing, and machine building benefit many customers’ broaching projects, including one that required better wrench jaw tooling.

The client in question was a manufacturer of ready-to-assemble wrench jaws, and Ohio Broach provided the solution it needed.

Deep slot in one pass

The company was employing an inadequate wrench jaw tooling process for its projects: workers were tooling the jaws on a small machine with a mere two feet of stroke, so the deep slot in each part required multiple passes to broach. As a result, production tended to slow down due to frequent tooling breakage. The customer needed a better option immediately – and Ohio Broach was there to offer it.

The Ohio Broach crew redesigned the slot tools to broach every deep slot in only one pass. Now the process could be conducted on a 15-ton machine with 90 inches of stroke. It also allowed the employees to broach rounded slots and serrated tooth forms in progressive operations on the same machine.

Ohio Broach recommended a three-step process of broaching, drilling, and finishing, so that workers could now transfer materials between production stages more quickly. This increased the productivity and efficiency of the operation. Following each stroke of the broaching machine, the operator could remove a fully broached part from the fixture and turn around to place it in the drilling machine, to drill every hole to tolerance during the broaching of the next part. The drilling machine would clamp the fixture hydraulically when a few buttons were pressed. Finally, the part would be finished off with deburring, heat treatment, and black oxidization.

The customer went ahead with this new wrench jaw tooling process right away, and the results were obviously better than before. Not only were broaching projects faster and easier – they also avoided unnecessary repetition and downtime. With Ohio Broach, these outcomes are the standard.
