Chrome moly suits high pressures, temperatures.

Daemar Inc. offers essential components for endless industrial applications, including ones made from chromium-molybdenum steel, or chrome moly. This low alloy steel offers extra strength that makes it perfect for high-pressure and high-temperature tasks. Its unique blend of chromium and molybdenum begets high tensile strength, high corrosion resistance, and high temperature resistance, which makes it ideal for many applications in many sectors. Also referred to as “P Grade” material, its most common forms are P5, P9, P11, P22, and P91.

From refineries to pipelines

Other benefits of using this metal include wear resistance, hardening, and easy fabrication. In modern power boilers, which often function at pressures higher than 5,000 pounds per square inch and temperatures above 537 degrees Celsius, chrome moly is often chosen over carbon. The more the chromium and molybdenum are increased within the steel, the more allowable the stress is at higher temperatures and the stronger the steel is. Designers may select tougher options like the P91 for thinner walls, or thicker wall pipes with less toughness with the P22 or P11.

With its unique properties, chrome moly is most recommended for use in refineries, oil and gas pipelines, chemicals, heat exchangers, power plants, and pulp and paper. Choosing the right variation can be tricky, and Daemar suggests the following factors that design engineers should consider:

  • required physical strength;
  • upper-temperature limits;
  • stress tolerance;
  • number of operating cycles and thermal fatigue;
  • number of loops and bends, and their configurations;
  • creep resistance;
  • welding factors, including procedures, quality assurance, and filler material;
  • hardness measurements;
  • preheating temperatures and post-weld heat-treatment temperatures; and
  • fabrication time and cost.

It is also important to consider the temperature of water or steam, pH, oxygen content of the liquid, steam quality, flow velocity, oxide layer quality of the internal pipe surface, and chemical composition. P5 and P9 chrome moly are suitable for petroleum applications, while P11 and P22 work for power generation, petroleum, and high temperatures, and P91 is recommended for power generation.
