Chemical manufacturer saves energy with Versa-Matic bolted metal AODD pumps

Versa-Matic air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps are available through York Fluid Controls Ltd. These products came in handy for a major chemical manufacturer in South Carolina when it was expanding its facility. This company was using an aging, near-obsolete group of pumps that the producer was no longer supporting.

Needing a more modern pump design with better reliability and efficiency, the chemical manufacturer put its trust into the Versa-Matic name.

Annual savings of US$50,000

The company required new chemical-transfer pumps to complete the expansion efficiently. Its existing pumps used outdated technology and wasted energy; the manufacturer had to use three 75-horsepower air compressors to run them. Management would have to buy a new air compressor to keep these pumps running, which would cost an extra $100,000. The new chemical-transfer pumps also needed to be chemical-resistant, since the facility used many chemicals in production.

So the firm turned to a local Versa-Matic distributor, which recommended a series of three-inch bolted metal AODD pumps in stainless steel with Santoprene elastomers. These units could stand up to every harsh chemical that the plant used, while meeting flow and pressure requirements. These pumps were also more efficient than the current models were.

The supplier installed one pump in the facility for a trial period of 90 days, to check that it would serve as a robust, reliable, and energy-efficient unit. After determining that the pump was perfect for the application, the customer bought 30 similar pumps for the facility. Since then, the chemical manufacturer has achieved an annual savings of US$50,000.

These savings stem from high energy efficiency, versatility, and utility-company grants. As for efficiency, the manufacturer no longer needed an extra air compressor; it could simply turn off one of the existing compressors. Regarding versatility, the pumps could be moved throughout the plant to handle various tasks because they were all the same model. Finally, the lower energy consumption allowed the customer to received more than $50,000 in grant money from a local power corporation.
