From humble beginnings to success

Fish started out by selling keys and security hardware, equipped with nothing but a bicycle to make his rounds. Even as a teenager, Fish was a natural entrepreneur and innovator – inventing the push-button lock, which is still very popular today. To stay in business, he bought a die-casting factory called Capitol Industries. Fish went on to develop Unican Security Systems, later Ilco Unican, a globally successful security corporation.

In 2000, Swiss security giant Kaba bought Ilco Unican from Fish. But he could not stay out of the industry for long. Only seven years later, Fish bought Capitol back from Kaba, in order to preserve its expertise and the jobs of longtime employees, as well as its status as a family-owned company. Over the past dozen years, Capitol has returned to its roots as a developer of security solutions, continuing to develop new and better product lines.

Today, Capitol is the only Canadian company that designs and manufactures its own standard cam locks and specialty locks, while other businesses merely source components offshore and assemble them. All of this is done under one roof in Montreal, by a company that has earned ISO 9001-2015 certification.
