Capitol Industries: Canadian manufacturer’s success has always relied on innovative solutions

A natural entrepreneur and innovator

In the beginning, Aaron Fish sold keys and security hardware, making his rounds on his trusty bicycle. The boy proved himself quickly to be a natural entrepreneur and innovator: he invented the push-button lock, still widely used today. Fish remained in business by buying a die-casting factory called Capitol Industries; he later developed Unican Security Systems, later Ilco Unican, which went on to be a globally recognized security company.

Swiss security giant Kaba (now dormakaba) bought Ilco Unican from Fish in 2001. But there was no keeping him out of the industry, and in 2007, he bought Capitol back from Kaba, as he wanted to preserve its expertise, the jobs of its veteran employees, and its status as a family-owned business. In the ensuing years, the company has returned to its roots as a producer and supplier of industrial locking solutions. Today, Capitol continues to develop new, better product lines for various applications.

Capitol is the only Canadian manufacturer that designs and makes its own standard cam locks and specialty locks, unlike other companies that source components from offshore. The Capitol team does everything under one roof at its ISO 9001-2015-certified plant in Montreal. These industrial locking solutions are wholly North American-produced quality goods that are exempt from tariffs and duties.
