Bridge infrastructure plays a critical role in enabling the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across Canada. That is why standards that focus on bridge design, like the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, are such an essential tool. The 11th edition of the code is now available, and aims to support the implementation of a national highway transportation system with agreed minimum standards and loadings for bridges on interprovincial highways.
11th edition
The newest version of CSA S6 – Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, available now in English and French, applies to the design, evaluation and structural rehabilitation design of fixed and movable highway bridges, and establishes safety and reliability levels that are consistent across all jurisdictions in Canada. The 11th edition contains several significant revisions to sections focused on seismic design, methods of analysis, foundations and geotechnical systems, and barriers and accessory supports.
A supporting document
The code is complemented by CSA S6.1 – Commentary on CAN/CSA S6-14, Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, which provides added rationale and explanatory material for many of the clauses of the standard. This commentary also provides additional background information on the design provisions of CSA S6 to help designers deal with issues not explicitly addressed in the code.
Additional details
The code is available for purchase in hard copy or PDF formats, and is also available as part of a package that combines the standard along with the commentary document.
