The expanded-beam fibre-optic cable assembly, from HARTING

Among the HARTING Technology Group’s many top-notch connectivity solutions for industrial users are its fibre-optic cable assemblies, which can carry high-bandwidth transmissions for many applications. Now, the manufacturer has launched a major upgrade on these products in Canada: the new fibre-optic cable assemblies with expanded beams, designed for use in harsh outdoor work environments.

From the oilsands to festivals

Cable assemblies are required in outdoor work in a wide array of industries, including oil and gas, mining, power generation, tunnel boring, transmission, and shipbuilding. Even the entertainment industry uses them, in such applications as broadcasting and outdoor music festivals. But extreme temperatures and nasty weather can play havoc with unprotected cable connections.

HARTING’s new expanded-beam assembly shields the fibre material under a connector housing that keeps out dust, dirt, and water. The cable assembly is also designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. This way, power and broadcast information can be transmitted safely and securely, regardless of weather or the cleanliness of the environment.

The expanded-beam fibre-optic cable assembly is easy to install, with a genderless connection that always fits other assemblies perfectly. Users can easily expand the length of an optical connection by connecting another cable; additional adaptors are not necessary. This leads to considerable cost and time savings. Maintenance is also much simpler than with other connectivity products, with no special tools or training needed.

While most optical interfaces are very sensitive to contamination or temperature, which results in unreliable connections and transmissions in outdoor work spaces, the expanded-beam assembly from HARTING is designed to eliminate this worry, regardless of the working environment or the size or distance of the transmission. As a ruggedized, two- and four-fibre channel solution that is IP-68-rated in mated and unmated conditions, this product changes the nature of outdoor cable connections.
