Wire rope is used in many different applications, each requiring varying demands for strength, abrasion and corrosion resistance. To meet each application’s unique requirements, Bergen Cable Technology produces its wire rope in a number of different materials and diameters.

Material options

Stainless steel is used if corrosion is a concern. The most common grade used is type 302 (made of 18 per cent chromium and eight per cent nickel alloy) thanks to its corrosion resistance and high strength. Type 305, on the other hand, is used where non-magnetic properties are required. However, this type experiences a slight loss of strength. Other types frequently used include 304, 316 and 321, each offering different advantages.

Galvanized carbon steel is used where strength is a top requirement, and the corrosion resistance is not great enough to require the use of the more pricey stainless steel. Wires used in these wire ropes are individually coated with a layer of zinc, which provides some protection from corrosion.

Cable construction

The diameter of the cable or strand is also a major consideration because it determines the cable’s flexibility. The greater the number of wires in a strand or cable of a given diameter, the more flexible it is. For example, a 1×7 or a 1×19 strand, with seven and 19 wires respectively, is used in applications where the cable is fixed or where flexing is minimal. However, cables designed with 3×7, 7×7 and 7×19 construction provide for increasing degrees of flexibility, but decreased abrasion resistance. These designs would be ideal in applications where continuous flexing is a requirement.
