The LDS V406 permanent magnet shaker

Durham Instruments teams up with Brüel & Kjær to offer a wide range of test and measurement tools. One great solution is the LDS V406 permanent magnet shaker, a popular pick for general vibration tests; it is also commonly used in universities and research facilities. This magnet shaker works for a broad variety of industrial applications. Examples include fatigue and resonance testing of small electronics and the study of biomedical materials and devices.

Versatile and dependable unit

Also useful as a non-seismic pickup, velocity transducer, or high-speed actuator, the LDS V406 is a versatile and dependable unit designed for maximum performance. Its usable frequency range runs from five to 9,000 hertz, and when supplied as standard, it has a nominal peak sine rating of 98 newtons. The device can produce a sine vector force of 196 newtons if paired with the recommended LDS PA500Lamplifier and cooled with an external fan.

With an armature diameter of 38 millimetres, this permanent magnet shaker incorporates a robust yet lightweight moving armature with adequate support for test loads, without undermining force capability. Two laminated-fibre flexures are bonded to the device to afford the armature with axial support and enhance lateral and rotational restraints.

The device is typically base-mounted, although trunnion mounting is available. An auxiliary suspension unit can be added for vibration screening on large, spring-mounted structures; this allows the LDS V406 to hang vertically from the device under test, increasing payload capacity. Unlike with normal operation, the auxiliary suspension allows obverse movement.

Use scenarios for this permanent magnet shaker: modal and structural analyses, including civil engineering applications like bridge testing; vibration screening of small components and testing of electronic assemblies; laboratory experiments, including powder separation or compacting; testing of medical devices and material; fatigue and resonance testing; accelerometer calibration; and machinery condition monitoring and vibration measurement.

With its versatility, the LDS V406 is a boon to many industrial sectors. Durham Instruments deems it suitable for tasks in general manufacturing, aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, and transportation.
