As an expert in all aspects of broaching, The Ohio Broach & Machine Company can offer services to meet any need. From tool sharpening to broaching production and machine manufacturing, Ohio Broach does it all. But it can be difficult to understand all the options available without knowing the basics of broaching.

Broaching basics

Broaching is a machining method that removes material with a toothed tool known as a broach.

The basic shape of a broaching tool is similar to a saw, except the teeth increase in height along the length of the tool. Also, broaches have three different sections for use at different points in the machining process — one section is for rough machining, the next is for semi-finishing, and the last is for finishing.

Broaching benefits: Precision and versatility

When compared to other machining processes, broaching offers high precision results. But to maintain this precision, it is important to make sure broach tools are kept sharp and in good condition. Ohio Broach can help, as the company offers broach sharpening, repair and reconditioning services.

The broaching process is often used when odd shapes are required because it offers versatility. For instance, Ohio Broach offers production broaching services and has experience machining a wide variety of parts. Some examples of broaching applications include the machining of splines, keyways, holes (both circular and non-circular), flat surfaces, teeth and serrations. Workpieces that are typically broached include castings, forgings, stampings and screw machine parts.

Broaching is best used on softer materials such as brass and aluminum. However, machining of harder materials, including stainless steel and titanium, is possible. Ohio Broach makes all types of broaching machines that are capable of machining everything from bronze and copper alloys to non-metallic materials such as graphite, hard rubber, some plastics and wood composites.
