Denso Bore-Wrap recently played an important role in an Ontario pipeline assignment.

Denso North America makes sealing and protection solutions that are used widely in infrastructure projects. Earlier this year, Kitchener Utilities in Kitchener, Ont. needed to install about 210 metres of a new yellow jacket pipe in a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) project, and it wanted an alternative product to protect the weld joints during the installation process. Here is how Denso Bore-Wrap served as the perfect solution for this application.

A sacrificial abrasion-resistant outerwrap

Kitchener Utilities owns and operates the gas and water infrastructure within the municipal boundaries of the City of Kitchener. The project involved installing the welded steel pipe in two separate pulls. The gas main lay in a low-lying area next to a creek beside a pedestrian path, so Kitchener Utilities decided on the HDD technique to minimize environmental effects in the area. HDD has become a common method of installing buried pipe in urban areas, or places where open-cut pipes are not feasible. Although HDD is not a new technique, the technology behind it has evolved dramatically in recent years, as have the coatings that protect directionally drilled pipe from corrosion.

Workers welded the yellow jacket pipe sections together. Then, after conducting the appropriate quality-control checks on the welds, they covered every joint with bituminous tape to protect the piping from corrosion. They covered this with a double layer of Denso Bore-Wrap. This product is designed specifically as a sacrificial abrasion-resistant outerwrap that protects the anti-corrosion coating from abrasion and gouging at every weld joint during the HDD process.

The use of Denso Bore-Wrap was justified after the project contractor, NPL Canada, had to pull a part of the piping in the dry, since the water they had injected into the bore at the drill head had stopped working momentarily. When NPL personnel excavated down to inspect the pipe, they found the Bore-Wrap unaffected at all. NPL was impressed with how easy Bore-Wrap had been to apply and the finished results, plus the support that Denso had provided.

Once again, Denso had pleased another satisfied customer, the most recent of many.
