Safety Cable was invented by Bergen and GE.

For more than eight decades, Bergen Cable has been a leading supplier of industrial cable solutions with an illustrious corporate history. A key highlight of this success is the company’s role in the development and creation of Safety Cable, which serves the aerospace sector as a convenient alternative to lock wire.

As the safest, most cost-effective, and most easy-to-install option in the cable market for quicker fastener retention, Safety Cable has been an essential system for more than 35 years.

The four main elements

Bergen developed this unique cable solution in collaboration with General Electric Aircraft Engines in 1987. The partners tested this new cable at the GE plant and found that it cut installation time in half. It also provided higher quality with reduced assembly expenses. Since then, Safety Cable has become the industry’s standard solution for fastener retention. This Bergen product has four main elements:

  • Safety Cable tool. Bergen provides cable tools with diameters of 0.022, 0.032, or 0.04 and nose lengths of three, five, or seven inches. These tools come with 360-degree rotating noses that enable easier use in nonstandard positions.
  • Safety Cable. Lengths range from nine to 36 inches. Materials include 304 or 321 stainless, Inconel 600 for high-temperature or non-magnetic tasks, and Inconel 625 for anti-corrosion protection. Bergen recommends self-looping cable for fasteners without holes and provides filler washers for fasteners with oversized lock-wire holes.
  • Ferrules. Available as a spring-loaded magazine containing 50 ferrules, all of which come in the same materials and diameters as the cable does. Bergen also offers elongated ferrules that allow appropriate retention of fasteners with limited clearance.
  • Accessories. Torque blocks for periodic verification of tool settings, to ensure correct tool operation quickly; precision torque wrenches, for use with torque blocks; cutter gripper tools, for removing cable and lock wire safely and efficiently; and electronic load testers, for tension and ferrule pull-off tests.
