Safety Cable was created by Bergen and GE.

In its 80 years as a major provider of cable solutions, Bergen Cable has an illustrious corporate history. One key highlight was its participation in the development of Safety Cable, a convenient alternative to lock wire. An essential fastener-retention system for the aerospace sector for more than three decades, Bergen Safety Cable is the safest, most cost-efficient, and most easy-to-install option in the cable market for faster fastener retention.

Higher quality, shorter installation time

The company developed this cable solution in 1987, in partnership with General Electric Aircraft Engines. GE and Bergen tested this new cable at the GE plant and discovered that it cut installation time in two; it also offered higher quality and decreased assembly costs. Over the past 35 years, Safety Cable has become the standard solution for fastener retention in the aerospace industry.

Bergen Safety Cable has four primary elements:

  • Safety Cable tool – Bergen offers cable tools with diameters of .022, .032, or .04 and nose lengths of three, five, or seven inches. These tools come with 360-degree rotating noses that allow easier use in nonstandard positions.
  • Safety Cable – with lengths ranging from nine to 36 inches. Materials include 304 or 321 stainless, Inconel 600 for high-temperature or non-magnetic applications, and Inconel 625 for anti-corrosion protection. Bergen recommends self-looping cable for fasteners without holes and offers filler washers for fasteners with oversized lock-wire holes.
  • Ferrules – available as a spring-loaded magazine containing 50 ferrules, all of which come in the same materials and diameters as the cable does. Bergen also offers elongated ferrules that enable proper retention of fasteners with limited clearance.
  • Accessories – torque blocks for periodic verification of tool settings, to ensure correct tool function quickly; precision torque wrenches, for use with torque blocks; cutter gripper tools, for removing cable and lock wire safety and efficiently; and electronic load testers, for tension and ferrule pull-off tests.
