Three of the four types of cable construction

For close to eight decades, North American industry has benefited from the strongest cable assemblies and more from Bergen Cable. Because the company has a diverse client base with widely varying cable needs, Bergen offers its cable products in different options for cable construction – four kinds of cable forms.

With this diversity in cable constructions, Bergen customers know that they can always get a solution to go with any unique need.

Stainless steel or carbon steel

Since different applications need different levels of strength and abrasion or corrosion resistance, Bergen offers cable assemblies with products made out of different materials. The two most frequently used materials are stainless steel and galvanized carbon steel. The latter is recommended for applications that need high strength, but in which corrosion resistance is not so essential. Galvanized carbon steel has a zinc coating protecting it from corrosive elements and is less expensive than stainless steel is.

Stainless steel cable is recommended for applications that justify the higher cost and in which corrosion is a major factor. Type 302 stainless steel is used most often. It is 18 per cent chromium and eight per cent nickel alloy. This material is popular because of its high strength and corrosion resistance. Bergen recommends Type 305 stainless steel for non-magnetic properties.

Bergen Cable offers four styles of cable forms:

  • 1 x 7 – This style offers the lowest level of stretch. Larger diameters come with relative stiffness, and smaller ones have the stiffest construction.
  • 1 x 19 – a fairly flexible cable type with a smooth exterior that resists compressive forces. The ones with diameters larger than 3/32 of an inch are the strongest cable forms.
  • 7 x 7 – a style that is highly recommended for use in general-purpose construction applications because of its strength and high flexibility. It especially suits use over pulleys. Other advantages of this style include durability and abrasion resistance.
  • 7 x 19 – the strongest, most flexible, and most stretchable product type that Bergen has to offer. Recommended most highly for pulleys.
