cable construction

Several styles of cable construction are available.

The strongest cable-assemblies and more: this is what Bergen Cable has provided for North American industry for almost 80 years. The company has a broad variety of customers with a range of different cable needs. As a result, Bergen offers products in different styles of cable construction. With this diversity of cable styles available, clients know that they can count on Bergen for a product to suit almost any requirement.

Varying levels of strength, resistance

Because different applications require varying levels of strength and abrasion or corrosion resistance, the Bergen team offers cable assemblies with products constructed out of different material. The two most commonly used materials are stainless steel and galvanized carbon steel. The latter is perfect for applications that require high strength, but in which corrosion resistance is not as important. Less expensive than stainless steel, galvanized carbon steel has a zinc coating that protects it from corrosive elements.

Bergen recommends stainless steel cable for tasks that justify the higher cost and in which corrosion is a significant factor. Type 302 stainless steel is most frequently used; it is 18 per cent chromium and eight per cent nickel alloy. This is a popular type due to its high strength and corrosion resistance. For non-magnetic properties, Bergen recommends Type 305 stainless steel.

The four styles of cable construction that are available from Bergen Cable:

  • 1 x 7. This cable style offers the least amount of stretch. Larger diameters come with relative stiffness, while smaller ones have the stiffest construction.
  • 1 x 19. A fairly flexible kind of cable that offers a smooth exterior, which resists compressive forces. The ones with diameters larger than 3/32 of an inch have the strongest cable construction.
  • 7 x 7. This style is highly recommended for use in general-purpose construction applications, due to its strength and high flexibility. It particularly suits use over pulleys. Extra benefits of this style include durability and abrasion resistance.
  • 7 x 19. The strongest, most flexible, and most stretchable product type that Bergen has to offer. This is much recommended for pulleys.
