Lock Clad cables, by Bergen

For more than 75 years – longer than any other wire-rope and cable-assembly company – Bergen Cable has been a leader in its field in North America. This manufacturer has earned a longstanding reputation for innovation, high quality, technical expertise, and reliable customer service.

One of Bergen’s many notable distinctions is that it is one of only two companies in the world that have been approved by the United States government for the production and distribution of Lock Clad cables, which are primarily used for aircraft control.

What are Lock Clad cables?

Lock Clad cables are specialized cables with high fatigue resistance, sold only after they have passed rigorous fatigue-resistance tests. They are manufactured by swaging aluminum alloy tubing onto galvanized or stainless aircraft cable that complies with the military specification MIL-DTL-83420, a rigid, exacting specification that was designed for the aerospace industry.

Lock Clad cables were invented to do away with the sagging that frequently occurs in long lengths of cable and to eliminate wear and tear. The aluminum tubing on the cable prevents abrasion of the outer wires as the assembly is dragged through bulkheads and other obstructions on an aircraft.

Although these cable assemblies were originally intended for the aerospace sector, they have also found a wide range of acceptance in other industries and applications. This is because Lock Clad cables have many considerable advantages:

  • A substantial reduction in stretch;
  • Elimination of all cable sag;
  • A fine cylindrical surface that allows the cable to be sealed when users pass it through pressurized bulkheads;
  • A signification reduction in cable vibration or “singing”; and
  • A higher coefficient of thermal expansion.

If Lock Clad cables are strong, flexible, and durable enough for applications on aircraft, where safety and exactitude are of utmost importance, they are certainly worthy of other cable functions.

About the company

Founded in 1942, Bergen Cable is the longest-running wire-rope and cable-assembly company currently in existence. With headquarters in Fairfield, NJ, Bergen helps companies across the world choose correct assemblies for their unique applications, particularly in the aerospace sector.
