No tendency to twist

Wire rope and cable are often referred to as if they were the same thing. But wire rope actually denotes ropes with diameters that exceed 3/8 of an inch, whereas ropes with smaller diameters are known as cords or cables. The preforming process on wire rope keeps wires and strands in their proper positions, eliminating their tendency to straighten.

As broken ends do not porcupine, they are not as conspicuous as those of standard wire rope. Greater care is required during inspection of worn preformed rope to determine its true condition.
