Gould Fasteners can supply a wide range of Heli-Coil inserts. These precision-formed inserts can offer protection and added strength for tapped threads in any material. They are available in a variety of coatings, platings and materials. Each of the different options for Heli-Coil inserts offer their own advantages, which make them appropriate for many different applications.

Heli-Coil insert materials

The standard Heli-Coil inserts are thread coils made from extremely hard, diamond-shaped 304 stainless steel wire. This material is stocked in most sizes and is perfect for OEM and MRO applications. Heli-Coil inserts are also available in Inconel X750. This non-magnetic option is used for applications involving exposure to high temperatures, such as well drilling, nuclear applications and gas turbine engines.

Another material option is Nitronic 60. It requires no additional coatings or plating, offers superb resistance to galling, and is compatible with stainless steel screws. This material is also particle-free and non-magnetic. It is well suited for use in vacuum environments.

Phosphor bronze inserts, which provide excellent electrical conductivity, can be supplied for salt water applications. Also available is titanium, which features superior strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and low-temperature stability.

Coating and platings

Once an insert material has been chosen, there are many options available for coatings and platings. For example, dry film lubricant is available for high-friction applications. It provides high temperature resistance, as it can be used in temperatures up to 204 degrees C (400 degrees F). This coating is highly recommended when using screw-locking inserts. Another coating available is Primer Free II, which eliminates the need for zinc primers and epoxies. It prevents galvanic corrosion, eliminates locking torque issues, and makes installation more efficient by providing lubrication.

Silver plating is also available. It can reduce galling of threads at high temperatures, and is ideal for use on inserts made of Inconel X750. It can be used in temperatures up to 649 degrees C (1200 degrees F). Another option is colour coding, available in blue, green, red and black. Colour coding makes it fast and easy to distinguish inserts of similar size, and helps to verify the insert installation.
