John Brooks Company found the perfect pumping solution for a cannabis company.

With its long history of customer success stories, John Brooks Company Limited can promise the right fluid-control solution for every industrial scenario out there. A recent example involved a new cannabis-processing facility in southern British Columbia that required a new pump to transfer extremely viscous cannabis oil throughout its processing machinery.

By providing a special Almatec Chemicor air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump, John Brooks Company provided substantial benefits for this customer.

Lower maintenance time and cost

The challenge of this application was to lift high-viscosity oil at a high temperature and low flow rate. The new pump needed to lift oil with a flow rate of less than two litres per minute, handle oil with viscosity ranging from 8,000 centistrokes at 110 degrees Celsius to 10,000 centistrokes at 80 degrees Celsius, and manage the high-temperature requirement to keep the oil fluid enough for transfer.

The customer got in touch with Alex Tarahomi and Stephen Sinclair, two application experts with John Brooks Company. Alex and Stephen considered three pump technologies that could work – gear pumps, peristaltic pumps, and AODD pumps. After a discussion with the company that took time and budget constraints into account, the experts recommended the Almatec Chemicor AD20STT-E-T AODD pump.

The AD20STT-E-T pump came with the following benefits:

  • lower cost than that of an FDA-compliant gear pump;
  • fewer replacement costs, including no need to replace a hose because of high-temperature wear, as on a peristaltic pump;
  • cost savings due to an optimized flow pattern that reduced air consumption and noise;
  • maintenance- and lubrication-free air-control system;
  • lower maintenance time and cost, as there were no drives, rotating parts, or shaft seals in the pump;
  • fast and simple installation; and
  • C1D2 Safe for Area classification.

The facility installed the Almatec unit and immediately yielded great results, especially reliable operation with simple, affordable maintenance, which minimized downtime and maintenance expenses. With fewer components to replace or repair, the pump contributed to monthly savings in service costs.
