The Acuity AS2100 laser distance sensor

Acuity test and measurement solutions are available in Canada through Durham Instruments – including the innovative AS2100 laser distance sensor. Offering high accuracy at long range, this device measures natural targets up to 100 metres (m) away and Acuity reflective targets up to 500 m away, with an accuracy of plus or minus one millimetre, depending on environmental conditions and target reflecting ability. In optimal conditions, the AS2100 has a maximum measurement frequency of 250 hertz.

Simple aim and setup

This rugged laser sensor can accurately measure on difficult targets, including black surfaces with solar irradiation. For simple aim and setup, the AS2100 has a Class 2, red, visible laser diode, and the spot size begins at 0.15 of an inch and increase to about two inches at 100-m distances. At longer distances, larger targets may be required.

The AS2100 can communicate using RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 serial protocols with adjustment of one parameter. It comes with a standard 4-20-mA, analog, current loop output that the user can set to 0-20 mA; this output can also be programmed with a custom measurement span, with minimum and maximum currents set to any points in the laser’s range. This sensor comes with a built-in USB connection option for easy troubleshooting and testing.

With its high performance specifications and measurement accuracy, the AS2100 is a versatile unit that is ideal for many applications and industries. Durham Instruments recommends it for use in the following scenarios:

  • Metal production. Control of fill level for steel and iron, cut-to-length applications, and dimensional measurement of hot material. Also suitable for steel and aluminum manufacturing.
  • Transportation. Positional measurement in material-handling processes, crane positioning, trolleys and vertical lift positioning, and floodgates.
  • Fill-level measurement. Silo-level measurement, as well as control of the filling and pouring of steel and iron.
  • Process control. Cut-to-length measurement in steel and lumber; diameter and width measurement of rolls in paper and steel; length or width positioning measurement for sorting applications; and many other examples.

These are just a few of many possible uses for the AS2100.
