irregular shapes

Some of the shapes Ohio Broach can produce.

The Ohio Broach & Machine Company offers an unparalleled range of broaching services. With its skilled team of machinists and designers, this company can handle any project a customer may bring, from in-house production broaching to building custom broaching machines. These talented personnel can also cut various regular and irregular shapes into metal, to create medical implants, hand tools, and other useful items.

Mix of machinery and skill

To form this diverse array of metal shapes, the Ohio Broach crew uses its skills on the company’s own in-house-built machinery. This state-of-the-art equipment helps staff satisfy customers with a variety of regular and irregular shapes. Companies can choose from the following examples of shapes and more:

  • Hexes and squares – Ohio Broach uses a technique called “broaching on the fly” to create hexes and squares in just one cycle. The process involves indexing parts that need these forms with the help of a gap between the tools. Workers can cut multiple surfaces in this way in only one pass.
  • Irregular shapes – The Ohio Broach crew can broach a variety of slots, angles, keyways, and radii on virtually any material, including several kinds of steel. This can be accomplished in the secondary and final operations on parts, in merely or two passes.
  • T-shaped slots – Machinists at Ohio Broach can create special slots, including the distinct T shape, in one or two passes. In the two-pass version, the first pass forms the slot and the next generates the top of the T shape. Almost any kind of metal part can be broached in this way, including brass, copper, and steel parts.
  • Teeth and serrations – Teeth and serrations are also possible with Ohio Broach’s capabilities. For example, personnel can create gear teeth on the round rack of a tractor’s power-steering unit, as well as intricate serrations on the motor mount of a large tank. Another common example is small telephone dialing mechanisms, which can be surface-broached like this.
  • Miscellaneous – Other shape examples include polygons, involute splines, and plier forms.
