CompAir helped the BBC with air-supply needs at a temporarily location.

CompAir is respected worldwide for its unmatched skills in providing compressed air for businesses. One notable success story happened more than five years ago, when Great Britain’s main broadcasting organization required an on-the-move air supply during a temporary relocation. A local Gardner Denver distributor, Air Energy Limited, offered the perfect CompAir air station for the application, complete with integral dryer and filtration, and saved the day.

A fast, simple solution

When the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was having its Television Centre redeveloped, it relocated its TV studios and post-production arm to Elstree Film Studios just outside of London. Although the Television Centre studios had a compressed-air system, Elstree had no onsite air-production capability. The BBC needed a fast, simple solution for on-demand air.

Studios typically use air skates to move audience seating across floors to prevent damage to the surface, as a level, even floor is essential for smooth camera movement. Air skates discharge air directly onto the floor, so a compressor must always supply clean, moisture-free air; water or oil in the air can be a safety hazard.

The BBC conducted an initial audit to assess the compressed-air demand, calculating the maximum weight of the audience platform and the required operating pressure to achieve sufficient lift. Then Air Energy supplied two trial compressors to help the department pick the one correctly sized to suit the demand. After a successful trial, the BBC chose a standalone CompAir L18FS air station.

The L18FS is a complete, cost-efficient unit that provides compressed air at up to seven bar. It has an oil-lubricated screw compressor mounted on the air receiver and packaged complete with a refrigerant dryer, which lowers the compressor’s footprint by 55 per cent. This air station is easy to use and maintain, with a receiver that is inspection-free for up to five years of operation.

The department mounted the complete unit onto a trailer for easy transportation between studios. The L18FS powered the BBC’s air skates with clean, dry air as it manoeuvred mobile audience-seating platforms around Elstree. Once again, CompAir provided the right solution.
