Denso products were used on a 50+-year-old sanitary chamber in Toronto last year.

Denso North America is trusted by pipeline builders, infrastructure workers, and many others across the Canadian industrial landscape for its world-class protective products. From petrolatum-tape systems to mastics and primers, Denso’s many solutions prove themselves to be worthy of the most important and challenging projects and applications, again and again.

Recently, Denso played an important role in reviving an old sanitary chamber, located in an environmentally sensitive area of Toronto’s Don Valley Park behind the Ontario Science Centre.

Fifty years of erosion

Originally installed in the 1960s, this sanitary chamber was badly in need of updated corrosion and sealing protection when City of Toronto maintenance personnel uncovered it last year. Half a century of water, ice damage, and foliage growth had resulted in severe erosion and corrosion. As there was a danger of a heavy steel frame falling onto a sanitary pipe, maintenance was urgent.

After removing earth and failed concrete down to more structurally sound concrete, the workers used a special mortar to create a flat surface and procure a replacement box chamber to sit on the top. Water filtration and destruction from the freeze thaw cycle were still potential risks to the chamber. For the best solution, the workers turned to Denso.

The City chose to use Denso Petrolatum Tape, mastic and primer, in a joint-sealing system that has many decades of proven performance. First, the workers laid Densyl Mastic on a prepared mortar surface before setting the box chamber on top. Then they applied Hi-Tack Primer in a thin uniform coating on the exterior and let it sit for a few minutes, until the thinning agent evaporated. Next, they wrapped 12-inch Hi-Tack Tape around the joint, starting 15 centimetres below and wrapping upwards with a 50 per cent overlap. They pressed the tape down firmly to ensure intimate contact and adhesion to the surface before backfilling the area.

The Denso tape, mastic and primer provides a permanent, flexible, and watertight seal, so the City can remain confident that this sanitary chamber will remain structurally secure and sealed for many years to come.
