One of the belt conveyors available from Norpak

Norpak Handling Ltd. is a major supplier of material-handling products, including belt conveyors. These systems serve businesses as great logistical tools, since they help to transport items with accuracy and efficiency. Because plants and warehouses rely on conveyor systems, maintenance should always be a high priority.

To maximize productivity, avoid major repairs, and increase the lifespans of belt conveyors, Norpak offers six maintenance tips in a recent blog.

Frequent cleaning and inspection

First, the Norpak team advises checking pulley alignment and belt slippage. Belts must be aligned with pulleys, or else they cause uneven tension on one belt side, which increases the rate of belt wear. When torque exceeds friction between belt and pulley, the belt slides back due to slippage. Proper alignment and avoidance of overloading are recommended. Users should also track new belts appropriately: a replacement belt should be run slowly with appropriate adjustments made, since it likely will not track as well as the older belt did.

It is also vital to clean and maintain idlers, which can become soiled and worn out over time. They can also become misaligned or stop operating, and malfunctioning idlers result in premature wear in belts. Constant maintenance and repair can prevent this. Next, Norpak recommends inspecting bearings regularly. They should be checked for excessive noise or residue formation, which can signify worn-out bearings. When bearings are no longer useful, the rollers should be replaced.

The belt and motor should be cleaned thoroughly, to prevent dust and debris buildup. Users should inspect and clean the undersides regularly for any contaminant accumulation that could cause slippage. For this reason, Norpak recommends a system with belt scrapers or lifers. A motor that is filled with dust will eventually choke the fan vents and result in overheating.

Finally, Norpak strongly recommends storing spare parts, so the business can replace belts and other components when necessary. But improper storage can defeat the purpose. Small belts must be sealed in plastic and protected for moisture and sunlight, while large belts should be placed on skids to prevent wicking and moisture absorption.
