The Acuity AR500 laser position sensor, available in Canada from Durham Instruments

Durham Instruments is the great Canadian source of world-class industrial test and measurement instruments from major international manufacturers. One of these producers is Acuity, renowned for its state-of-the-art laser devices – such as the AR500 laser position sensor, which uses triangulation measurement principles to gauge distances to targets with great speed and accuracy.

Small enough to fit into a user’s palm, the AR500 has the perfect size for workers who build compact machines and systems.

Range up to one metre

Acuity has already had success with its AR200 and AR700 models of laser sensors. What distinguishes the AR500 laser position sensor from these devices is its longer range. Although the AR500 is roughly the same size as the AR200, its measurement range runs from five millimetres to one metre. While the AR700 series of laser displacement sensors have larger cases for longer ranges, all AR500 models have the same case size.

In addition, the AR500 can match the AR700 speed at 9,400 hertz. Although the AR700 is more accurate than the AR500, both are available with configurable laser diodes. Finally, the AR500 laser position sensor is the sole Acuity model that is available with optional blue laser diodes.

The AR500 measures distance by projecting a beam of laser light, which creates a spot on a target’s surface. A CMOS detector array inside the sensor views reflected light from the surface, and the sensor calculates the target’s distance from the image pixel data with its microprocessor. Then the distance is transmitted via serial communications or analog outputs; Ethernet is another available option. A variety of models are specified, each to enable a different measurement range and standoff.

Other options available with this device: connectivity kit; high-power lasers; cables; serial or analog interface; internal heater; air-cooled jacket; and spray guard.

The AR500 works well for such applications as lumber dimensions, molten silicon height, photovataics manufacturing, thickness measurement, and semiconductor equipment. Durham Instruments recommends it in aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, education, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.
