The Acuity AR651 Laser Micrometer, available from Durham Instruments

When Durham Instruments distributes industrial measuring instruments in Canada, its customers know they are getting the most current, up-to-the-minute technology available on the market. That goes for Acuity’s impressive line of laser measurement tools.

One of Acuity’s more recent breakthroughs is the AR651 Laser Micrometer, an optical micrometer designed to measure diameters, heights, and gaps in a number of industries – including aerospace, automation and controls, education, manufacturing, and research and development.

The shadow knows

In using the latest CCD digital technology for different kinds of measurement, the Acuity AR651 Laser Micrometer works by the “shadow” principle. In this technique, a laser or LED light is positioned through a collimated lens, creating a large light beam that is transmitted onto the CCD array. When the user puts an object in the measurement span, it forms a shadow on the CCD array; the micrometer then processes the image and calculates the measurement for the target.

This instrument is an ideal choice for many industrial applications, such as displacement measurement, profile measurement, sorting, gap measurement, measurement of several axes, and determining the diameters of large objects.

The AR651 has a number of significant benefits for users. Not only is it a cost-effective choice, but it also can handle large measurement spans. Other great features: a sampling rate of up to 2,000 hertz, a telecentric lens, a direct through beam, and compatibility with RS232/RS485/Ethernet. Multi-coordinate systems are also available.

Other features and specifications of the AR651:

  • measuring ranges of 25 to 98 millimetres, for minimum object sizes from 0.5 to two millimetres;
  • accuracy ranging from within five micrometres to within 20 micrometres, depending on the range;
  • synchronization input of 2.4 to five volts;
  • resistance against vibration, shock, extreme temperatures, and relative humidity; and
  • aluminum housing material.

Available options include Class 1 laser or LED light, logical outputs, trigger inputs, air-knife options, and a colour touch screen specifically programmed for this model. Other output options include RS232, RS485, or Ethernet, or an analog output of four to 20 mAmp or zero to ten volts.
