A simple way to prolong the life of centrifugal pumps

Investing in new equipment is not always a realistic option for manufacturers because of the costs involved. A more cost-effective solution is extending the life of existing equipment through regular maintenance.

An article written by Loren Nauss, business development manager at Henkel, and posted on the company’s website, outlines the importance of preventative maintenance when it comes to industrial centrifugal pumps, which, according to Nauss, “are as expensive as they are essential in nearly every industry.” In the article, Nauss uses industrial centrifugal pumps to illustrate the benefits of improving performance and efficiency during assembly and repair.

Breakdowns, and the downtime that results from them, can be extremely costly for any manufacturer. However, they can easily be avoided. The causes for these issues — a loose fastener, corrosion, worn shafts and casings — can all be caught early, before a breakdown, if preventative maintenance is performed on these pumps. 

Proactive maintenance, as Nauss calls it, can prevent common failures, extend part life to avoid replacement costs, and make disassembly easier for future modifications. 

Henkel, in fact, has a long list of products designed to help. For example, corrosion can be prevented with Loctite Nordbak Chemical Resistant Coating, which is designed to protect pump parts from the most severe chemical environments. In addition, shaft life can be extended with Loctite Fixmaster Superior Metal, an epoxy that will not rust, and allows the same component to quickly return to service.
